The Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993 requires each public school in the Commonwealth to have a school council made up of the principal, parents, teachers and at least one member of the community who is not affiliated with the school. The Memorial School Council is comprised of four parents, three teachers, and two community members, in addition to the principal, who serves as a permanent co-chair. Parent representatives serve for a two-year term, with elections taking place in the fall.
The school council is responsible for 1.) formulating an annual school improvement plan; 2.) adopting educational goals for the school; 3.) reviewing the school building's annual budget; and 4.) helping to maintain a welcoming school environment. In 2004-2005 the Council, in conjunction with 50 teachers, parents, students, and community members, created a vibrant Five-Year Plan to map out the long-term vision for Memorial School. They also spearheaded the complete renovation of the school's Jane O'Brien Theater, helping to raise almost $100,000 to support that effort.
Council meetings are open to the public and meeting notices are posted on the school website. Parents are encouraged to attend the meetings and participate. If you have any questions about the Memorial School Council, please feel free to contact any of the members.
