Memorial School, as part of our 5 Year Plan focus, is working hard to support school/district literacy goals. In the last three years we have begun to institute what is often called a "Balanced Literacy" model. We began this program as a K-2 initiative. Next year, our 3rd and 4th grade classrooms will follow this model as well. Generally, this means that students are receiving instruction in readng and writing that is more focused on the needs of each student than on on the abilities and progress of "the middle of the class," which is more
typical of the traditional basal reader programs. The following links provide parents with a basic understanding of Balanced Literacy terms and concepts.
